Description

Les peintures de la série Slogan de Zhang Dali démontrent l'intérêt de l'artiste pour la société chinosie actuelle. L'artiste s'approprie divers slogans du gouvernement chinois qui sont des expressions qui caractérisent le climat sociopolitique de la Chine continentale et sont plaquardés partout dans la ville de Pékin. Phrases liées à la politique de l'enfant unique, l'industrialisation et l'unité nationale sont peintes sur les visages de travailleurs migrants, assortis de cercles concentriques.

Les peintures sont visuellement invitent le spectateur à déchiffrer leur contenu. Le motif vertigineux en spirale a été sérigraphiée sur les lignes de texte peintes à la main. Les teintes subtiles se fondent sur la toile et dans l'oeil du spectateur pour former une seule image cohérente. Le caractère répétitif du texte et des cercles sont non seulement une référence aux série de Slogans précédentes de Zhang Dali qui ont été peints sur vinyle, mais aussi à la monotonie des phrases elles-mêmes. Les slogans du gouvernement chinois résonnent à travers la peinture. L'effet est presque abrutissant.


Zhang Dali crée un acte de répétition qui fonctionne sur plusieurs niveaux. Il aborde le rôle des médias chinois qui encouragents des sentiments spécifiques, en particulier le nationalisme. En plaçant ces phrases et des formes sur les individus, il examine les séquelles psychologiques de ce genre d'endoctrinement subversif.
