Ursula Biemann is a graduate of the Institute of Fine Arts in Mexico City, the New York School of Visual Arts (BFA) and the Whitney Independent Study Program (ISP), and was awarded the Meret Oppenheim Prize in 2009. Named Doctor honoris causa by the Swedish UMEA University in 2008, she is now research director at the Zurich University of Art.
At the same time an artist, theorist, scientist and poet, Biemann also explores the field of politics. Her interests are related to migratory phenomena, borders, gender, the environment and the evolution of the world. With videos, installations, photographs and writings, the artist deconstructs the ideas received and elaborates an other social reality.
Ursula Biemann recently exhibited at Neuer Berliner Kunstverein n.b.k., Bildmuseet Umea in Sweden, Nikolaj Contemporary Art in Copenhagen, FID in Marseille, TEK in Rome. She has also contributed to major exhibitions at Arnolfini in Bristol, LACE in Los Angeles, KIASMA in Helsinki and Jeu de Paume in Paris.
